Well...I was really bored, so I decided to embark on a reading journey on the book I talked about on my previous post. 《那些回不去的少年时光》
So, to start off, it's about a girl's life. About how she turned from the quiet, depressing self into a confident, cheerful and mature girl. It is written in past tense because it reflects on the writer looking back at her old self. The insertion of third person extracts at the front and the end of the book, apart from the first person writing style, also gives the book a better touch as it somewhat shows how mature the girl has become and also more vividly describes the starting and the ending. Following the fact that her divorced mother took her away from her grandfather who loved her, she started being very quiet and often got into trouble in school and with her parents. As a result, her parents never dared to confront her directly to talk about these as they knew sthat he had the ability to totally rebel against them. She did not like her parents, and liked to hang out with friends she made out there in society, who owned a game arcade together, and she is a frequent customer, noticed for bringing a book with her into the arcade everytime. She got very close with XiaoPo, one of her friends in society.
Everything worsened after her grandfather's death, where she rebelled even more. However, the rebellious part in her only got awakened when a teacher in her primary school accused her of stealing her classmate's pen, and thus, she retaliated and became even more rebellious, leading to a standoff with her English teacher in secondary one. Being asked to stand on the ping pong tables outside of class during English lessons, she learnt to cover up her feelings with a bright smile on her face, as deep down, she was really embarrassed then. But, this led to her missing lots of English lessons and thus, not being able to pull up her english grades when she started to work hard in Secondary three. Topping the school, she advanced to Junior College, where she finally got the boy who she had been crushing on since Secondary school. The boy was her Primary school classmate, and had also been crushing on her, since the incident where she was accused of theft of the pen as it was him who had taken the pen. Feeling remorseful for his actions that got her into trouble, he has been finding ways to repay her, but when he started to get jealous of her hanging out with other boys, he realised that he had started to develop feelings for her.
It all started on a school trip to Beijing and Tsingdao in China, where he used the excuse of being drunk to confess to her. "I would love to visit Tsingdao with you on our honeymoon" was hethat said, and at that point, only both of them knew what he meant. Meaning to surprise him during their honeymoon, the girl folded paper stars with slips of paper with words written on them and gave it to him as his birthday present. She never told him, and with the friction created between them, the boy suggested a breakup in a letter, not before kissing her. He mentioned that girls always remember their first kiss, and he wanted her to remember him as he couldn't forget her. After on, she carried on with her studies and excelled as the top student from her school, eventually going to QingHua University.
The mixture of emotions in the book makes it a must read, especially for students like me, as it relates closely to our lives. It also depicts a clear picture of how we should love someone, by showing the flaws of the love given in the book between the boy and the girl. The ending part is extremely touching, as the boy finally found out the secret in the paper stars through the girl's friend, after eleven years. The words written on the stars were very touching, and that adds to the tone of sadness at the ending part of the book. Most of the mysteries in the book were all revealed at the end, where there was the 3-part third person recount of how the girl, the boy and XiaoPo felt at the different incidents. Read it!!!!!
